Eat: El Charro Café — Tucson institution, legendary Mexican classics since 1922; El Güero Canelo — iconic Sonoran hot dogs, bacon-wrapped and loaded; Barrio Bread — award-winning heritage-grain breads and pastries.
Skip — don't: Anyplace on the downtown "Mexican plaza" circuit with a hawker out front and a mariachi photo on the door — the good food is in the family-run neighborhood spots, not the sign-chasers.
Specialty: Sonoran Mexican cuisine — the carne asada taco, the Sonoran dog, and chiltepin heat are a birthright here, not a trend.
Shops & crafts: Fourth Avenue vintage and oddity shops; Tohono O'odham basketry and Talavera pottery in Old Town artisans' stores; saguaro-shaped everything at the Gem Show vendors.
See: Saguaro National Park's giant cactus forest; the white-stucco San Xavier del Bac mission; Fourth Avenue's murals and funky storefronts.
Main Street: Congress Street glows at dusk — restored marquees, streetcar humming, desert light turning the old brick gold.
After dark: Catch live music and a local brew on Fourth Avenue, or stargaze out past Saguaro West where the desert sky goes black.
